P015 → Another Market
This project was commissioned by Hong-gah Museum as part of their array of research projects local to Beitou and was exhibited in " Beitou Local Flavors Collecting Project" held in 2019. This piece focuses on Beitou Market, engaging in a series of symbol collection and transformation, ultimately morphing into various objects within the exhibition space. Beitou Market is one of Taipei's oldest public traditional markets. The market's two-story building and the vendors in the surrounding alleys cater to the diverse needs of local residents, reflecting the rhythms and textures of their daily lives.
A visit to Beitou Market reveals the most authentic depiction of life, shaped by the passage of time—a mix of old and new: vibrant plastic baskets stacked on green-tiled stands, food stalls using a mix of ceramic bowls and melamine tableware, and hand-painted signs altered with modern fonts. The materials gathered during the market exploration were deconstructed, transformed, and reassembled to create a new market. Ready-made objects serve as visual cues, offering viewers a different perspective on contemporary human life. The familiar yet unfamiliar forms, colors, and lines invite viewers to interpret the work through their own experiences, recalling past memories that overlap and merge with the present, piecing together a personal market experience within their own life memories.
